Metalsmithing 101 Class FAQs
How does this class work?
Upon purchase of this class, you will automatically receive an email with a password protected link to access and download all the files you will need to complete this class.
This class is a series of digital downloads (.mp4) that covers “How to Create a Stacker Ring” from scratch, the tools you need to begin Metalsmithing, and my personal tips and tricks. The class is built in chapters so that you can take it at your own pace from the comfort of your own home. It is *not* an in person. However, I am available for follow-up questions via email at basecampjewelry@gmail.com
Do I need any previous experience in metalsmithing?
Nope!
This is a total beginner's class. Although, if you already have some experience with metalsmithing, you can still benefit from my class by expanding your knowledge of tools, studio safety, and tips that took me years to learn.
What skills will I learn?
The foundations of metalsmithing!
Soldering, sanding and filing, forming, how to use a Jeweler’s Saw, polishing, how to figure out your ring size, how to set up your pickle pot and dispose of spent pickle, studio safety, tools, and my personal tips and tricks!
What will I create?
You will learn how to make Stacker Rings.
Are the tools included in the purchase of the class?
No.
Tools must be purchased separately. However, I’ve created and included a “Glossary” of common metalsmithing vocabulary and my “Beginner’s Guide Tools List” that you can easily click on each item and purchase.
How much do all of the tools cost to get started?
About $600.
I’ve researched the best budget-friendly prices currently available for these products. In addition, I’ve included some optional upgrades. If you were to purchase all of these tools as well, it would add about $250 to your total cost. Add on about another $450-$500 if you want to upgrade and purchase a Foredom Flexshaft and sanding bits.
This list was built for the very basics of metalsmithing and designed for my Metalsmithing 101 class in which you learn to create stacker rings.This list *does not* include the tools needed for stone setting.
Just remember, this is an INVESTMENT. It costs a lot upfront to get started, but once you do, you’ll have these tools and skills for life.
How long will it take for me to complete the class?
About 1-1.5 hrs.
Although I do recommend taking the class in one sitting, my class is split up into chapters so that you can stop and start the class if need be to fit your schedule.
How many times can I watch this class after I download it?
As many times as you want! Once you purchase the class, it’s yours forever.
Can I do this from my own home? Is it safe?
Yes!
You don’t need much space at all.
I’m really big on safety and discuss studio safety numerous times throughout my class. My studio is set up at home out of our second bedroom. Just be mindful to keep your setup away from children and animals since you will be working with harmful & hazardous materials.
What if I hurt myself?
I am a self-taught Metalsmith and not a licensed teacher. By purchasing and using this course and its resources, you agree and are consenting that I, Beth Hay, and Basecamp Jewelry are not responsible for any injuries or harm done to yourself or others while taking this course.
Can I get a refund for this class?
No.
